California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Approves HIPAA Academy
Chicago, IL December 5, 2002 – The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) has awarded the HIPAA Academy the status of Continuing Education Provider, allowing registered nurses in the state of California to receive continuing education credit for HIPAA Academy programs. Additionally, the Certified HIPAA Administrator (CHA) program has been approved by the Board for 8 Continuing Education Contact Hours.
Since July 1, 1978, California registered nurses have been required to document continued competency by completing a minimum of 30 contact hours every two years in subjects relevant to the practice of nursing. Courses must be taken from providers approved by the BRN or other entities recognized by the Board.
The 1-day Certified HIPAA Administrator (CHA) program, focused on the Privacy Rule, examines the impact of the HIPAA legislation from the perspective of end users, such as nurses and administrators, responsible for delivering and supporting health-care related services. Students learn what resources they should access to obtain information and to follow the regulatory process. They will be able to effectively participate in a HIPAA program at their organization.
The HIPAA Academy also offers Continuing Education Credits through a number of other organizations. Some of these include: the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON), the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE), the Nebraska Board of Public Accountancy, the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
