BALTIMORE, MD May 15, 2002 -
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has been authorized as a
training center by the HIPAA Academy, an industry leader in helping the
health care industry comply with federal regulations governing the privacy
and portability of patient health data in the information age.
HIPAA is an acronym for The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996, a law that required the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services to establish national standards for electronic health care
transactions and national identifiers for providers, health plans, and
employers. HIPAA also set standards to balance concerns about the
security and privacy of patient health data with improving the efficiency and
effectiveness of the nation's health care system via computer technology.
As a Certified HIPAA Partner, in conjunction with the national rollout of the
HIPAA Academy Program, UMBC plans to deliver the acclaimed HIPAA Academy
Professional and Administrator awareness training beginning in October of
2002.
"The HIPAA Academy fills a void created by the vast requirements within the
HIPAA Legislation", said Allen Nguyen, President for the HIPAA Academy
Program. "People don't know where to go to prepare for HIPAA
compliancy. We have corporate executives to data entry personnel
desperately seeking a learning environment to relieve the stress associated
with a regulation of this magnitude. The Academy not only provides a
learning environment, it validates what you learn."
The HIPAA Academy structure is unique in that it delivers baseline HIPAA
knowledge and competence in the core skills that are broadly required for
Healthcare Executives, Senior Clinicians, Chief Information Officers,
Lawyers, Compliance Officers, Privacy and Security Officials, Quality
Assurance and Risk Managers, Insurance Executives, Physicians and Office
Managers, Pharmaceutical Company Executives, and Clinical Trial Organization
Professionals.
Business professionals in the health care and insurance industries as well as
IT professionals would find the HIPAA Academy programs as the critical first
step for acquiring HIPAA knowledge and skills to participate as valuable
members of HIPAA compliance teams within organizations.
Doug Kendzierski, an Associate Vice-Provost at UMBC explains, “This
training partnership is highly consistent with UMBC’s commitment to and
successful track record in addressing critical workforce and public policy
issues. Given the large number of health care providers in our region,
the obligation to respond to this particular issue is apparent. The
fact that it supports a major federal initiative, while ensuring the public’s
rights, magnifies our responsibility to provide service in a manner
consistent with the UMBC’s tradition of high-quality training programs.”
The HIPAA Professional exam validates knowledge and skills in the core areas
of HIPAA Administrative Simplification legislation, Transactions and Code
Sets Requirements, Privacy Requirements and Security Requirements. The
HIPAA Administrator exam validates knowledge and skills of end users that are
responsible for delivery and support of health care services and
administration.
Proctored exams for Certified HIPAA Professional and Certified HIPAA
Administrator will be available across hundreds of testing centers in the
United States, including UMBC, in July 2002.
